On Halloween last year, the Evanston community was reeling after confrontations between federal immigration agents and Evanston residents. This year, Evanston Latinos Executive Director Ricardo Villalobos hopes to “show Evanston that we are much more than what happened last year.” Villalobos hopes to do this through many of the Hispanic heritage and holiday events happening around town, including the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. Ofrendas, meaning offerings in Spanish, are altars dedicated to lost loved ones that families and friends welcome back during Día de los Muertos, typically celebrated Nov. 1 and 2. Residents can stop by events or see ofrendas over the next several days at Evanston Township High School, the Robert Crown Community Center, Northwestern University and several restaurants.
